Habitat Breaks Ground at Dewitt Street
March 27, 2009 | Filed Under Habitat News Archive
Amity Cares, a sponsor group for Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the future location of two new Habitat homes at 34 and 42 Dewitt Street, New Haven. The land was acquired from the City of New Haven. In spite of a rainy forecast, the weather turned out to be warm and pleasant for the attendees, which included Amity Cares members and supporters, Habitat staff and Board members, and several current and future Habitat homeowners.

A beautiful hand-crafted banner celebrating the occasion was presented by the makers–Girl Scout Troop #60226. Their sentiment says it all!

Helping Hands Will Get the Job Done!!!
Amity Cares is the financial sponsor of 34 Dewitt Street and will provide construction volunteers for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed later this year. This will be the third home that Amity Cares builds for Habitat. For more information about Amity Cares, contact co-chairs Cathie Miller at r.miller98@comcast.net or Claire Rusowicz at crusowicz@hotmail.com.
42 Dewitt Street is being separately funded by Casey Family Services. The house will be built by participants in the Skills for Life program. Habitat is partnering with Youth Continuum, a non-profit based in New Haven, whose mission is to work with youth transitioning from the foster care system to the world of work. Youth Continuum provides them job skills training, financial literacy education and general job readiness. Since February, Habitat has been training Skills participants in basic construction, tool use and work safety. The plan is that they will be involved in every stage of construction of the house.
It’s hard to believe that two beautiful new homes will exist on the bare lot pictured below in six months. Through the dedication and hard work of Habitat volunteers, donors and supporters and two future homeowner families, this site will be transformed from dirt and weeds into the American dream of homeownership.
