Community Builds
Habitat works with various groups throughout the community such as religious congregations, businesses, schools, and other civic organizations who band together to partner in the building of houses for the families it serves. These partnerships are called “Builds.” The Builds raise financial assistance, encourage community leadership and provide volunteers for the building of a Habitat home.
Habitat currently has three Builds: Amity Cares, Madison Cares and Sleeping Giant Build. Amity Cares is comprised of diverse groups from Westville, Orange, Bethany and Woodbridge; they are now raising funds to build their third home in New Haven. Madison Cares, which is building a new home at 23 Wilson Street in New Haven. This is the fifth house sponsored by Madison Cares, which draws its members from Madison, Guilford and the Shoreline. Sleeping Giant Build is Habitat’s newest group. SGB is sponsoring their first house at 75 Hallock Street in New Haven. Sleeping Giant members are primarily from Hamden and North Haven.
These partnerships or sponsorships of the building of specific houses for specific families are an example of why Habitat is able to say “We Build Community - one house, one family at a time.” Previous theme builds are “Covenant Build,” “Women’s Build,” and the “Collegiate Build”. The joy of giving is often greater than the joy of receiving, when volunteers from advantaged communities give back and contribute in a very tangible way to the improvement of people’s lives and their own community.
