Volunteering as an Individual

We welcome individuals who are not part of a group but who wish to volunteer. Individual volunteers must attend an orientation at the Habitat office - 37 Union Street in New Haven. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator to confirm your attendance and the date.

PLEASE NOTE:  We are not taking any more individual volunteer applications until November. The next volunteer orientation will be Wednesday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m.

Help build a Habitat home - join a construction crew

Most Habitat volunteers join construction crews and help build Habitat houses in the city of New Haven. We build year-round Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Our construction staff works alongside the volunteers and does all the training. Most volunteers are fairly unskilled when they begin working. Due to the amount of training we invest in our volunteers, we ask that all volunteers who join us make a commitment.

The best days for individuals to volunteer are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturdays are heavily scheduled with volunteers from our sponsor groups; therefore, there are very limited opportunities on that day for individual volunteers.

All volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the work site. We cannot provide or arrange transportation.

Volunteer in the Habitat office

Volunteers work with the Habitat office staff performing a wide range of administrative tasks. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Join a committee

Volunteers do much more at Habitat than build homes. They also help plan building projects, locate building sites, raise funds, support and educate families as they go through the program, and much more. Committees generally meet once a month on a weekday evening in New Haven.

Committee members should plan on making at least a one-year commitment. Volunteers who are fluent Spanish speakers are particularly needed.
