Community build Sleeping Giant Build will once again be raising funds for their next Habitat home at the Head of the Housatonic Regatta in Shelton on Saturday, October 8. Volunteers will be needed for three hours shifts between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is a great outdoor activity for individual volunteers and for groups. Signups are open now in VolunteerUp! Contact Arnie Cary for more info.
Online orientation and pre-applications for our homebuying program will be available from Monday, September 12 through Friday, September 23. This is the only time this year that we will be accepting pre-applications so please mark your calendars! The link to the orientation, which includes the pre-application, will be emailed on September 12. Pre-applications will then be available to print on your own or you may request to pick one up at the Habitat office or have one mailed to you. Please review the information about the homebuying program on our website so that you are prepared to view the orientation and complete your pre-application.
Congratulations to the Tirado Family!
The Habitat home at 139 Weybosset Street, New Haven has been completed and homeowner Alicia closed on the property last month! This house will be the home of Alicia and her daughter, Daliliah, who are both very excited to have a place of their own.
Special thanks to community build Raise the Roof for sponsoring this home and to the hundreds of volunteers who helped to build it.
The dedication ceremony for the Tirado family will take place on Sunday, September 18 at 1:00 p.m. at their home on Weybosset Street. We hope you will join us to celebrate!
After a two year hiatus, the Build at Bishop’s returns on June 11 with a full day of building and community! Volunteers 16 years of age and older are welcome to signup to build exterior walls for a future Habitat home. Community members of all ages are invited to stop by to fill Raise the Roof Message Walls with wishes, blessings, and artwork. The walls will be built into the build’s next sponsored Habitat house with the messages tucked into the heart of the home.
Volunteers interested in building should register in advance. Build shifts fill quickly so don’t delay!
This event takes place at The Little Red Barn at Bishop’s Orchards in Guildford.
Join us as we celebrate with the Bailey Family and the Bayor- Loue Family, each the proud owners of Habitat homes located at 603 and 611 Middletown Avenue in New Haven. These homes were completed in December and we are looking forward to their dedication ceremonies, especially the traditional “passing of the hammer” to each family.. In the interest of everyone’s health and safety, the event will be held outdoors and there will not be any shared food or drink.
The Great Give, New Haven’s 36-hour, online, community-wide giving event will take place May 4-5. This year our organization is raising funds during the event to offset the increasing cost of property acquisition. We are also inviting each of you to join us in engaging your own network of friends, co-workers, and family members in support of our work. If you would like to join us as a Peer-to-Peer Fundraiser please email Allison at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you for your support!
The ReStore Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the ReStore. Ro, the current ReStore Manager, is retiring (we will miss her so much!) and our organization is looking for someone with the right combination of personality and skills to replace her. Please view the ReStore Manager Job Description and let us know if you are interested in this role.
We are excited to announce that we are piloting the sale of t-shirts, canvas bags, and re-usable grocery bags so that you can show your support for building affordable homes in our community! Both individuals and groups may place orders by emailing Allison at email@example.com. T-shirts and canvas bags are $10 each and re-usable bags are $2 each. Pick-up for items will be at our build sites and our office in New Haven. Thank you in advance for showing your Habitat pride!
Community build Sleeping Giant Build is holding their 9th Annual Chili Bowl on Saturday, February 12 over Zoom! Please read their press release below for details on sampling restaurant-prepared chilies, bidding in the silent auction, and more!
Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven/Sleeping Giant Build
Announces Ninth Annual Chili Bowl – February 12, 2022
(January 5, 2022) Sleeping Giant Build’s Ninth Annual Chili Bowl is planned for Saturday, February 12, 2022, from 6:30-8:30PM. Proceeds from this virtual event will help raise funds for its thirteenth Habitat for Humanity home. This home will further Sleeping Giant Build’s mission to eliminate poverty housing by providing home ownership opportunities for low-income working families in the Greater New Haven area.
The upcoming Chili Bowl will feature chilis donated by five area restaurants. After guests pickup their chili sampler package, they will join the Chili Bowl on Zoom for a fun evening of music, games, a chili cooking class, and an opportunity to join the “chili showdown” and vote for their favorite chilis. The event will raise additional funds through an online silent auction. The auction will open on Friday, February 11.
Chili Bowl planning committee chair Teresa Nakouzi commented that “a variety of tasty chilis to sample, an opportunity to vote for their favorite chilis, great music, fun team trivia, hilarious party games, and tips from a top chili chef are sure to make this an incredible evening for our guests. Join us and help support a family’s Habitat for Humanity home!”
Admission to the Chili Bowl is $35 and includes chili samples, bread, dessert, and access to all entertainment. Tickets are available at bit.ly/sgbchili. All are welcome to bid in the silent auction at http://32auctions.com/chili22.
