National Women Build Week: May 5-12, 2018

For the 11th year, Habitat for Humanity and Lowe’s are engaging women nationwide to work together to build Habitat homes during this year’s National Women Build Week from May 5-12. In preparation for the build week, Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven and Lowe’s are asking women to get involved by signing up to volunteer and build.

During Women Build Week we will be working on home building projects in New Haven. Most volunteer work will be done at 45 and 47 Vernon Street, two homes right next door to each other. Our goal is to complete the construction of both these homes in June so all help will be greatly appreciated.

To sign up as an individual volunteer please go to VolunteerUp to create a profile and select your desired date. If you are part of a club, organization, or business that would like to volunteer as a group please contact Allison Mangles, Volunteer Coordinator, at amangles@habitatgnh.org or (203) 785-0794 ext. 110. No experience is needed and both men and women are welcome to join us on the site. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age or older.

If you cannot volunteer but you would like to be a part of Women Build Week please consider making a donation in honor of a special woman in your life.

Update: Thank you to all of the volunteers and the Lowe’s Heroes who made the Women Build a success! Lots of sheet rock work was completed in the two homes and everyone enjoyed their time on the work site. Be sure to check out the pictures from this fantastic event!

Dedication of 13 Rock Creek Road, New Haven

Join us as we ‘pass the hammer’ on Saturday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. at the dedication of the Adopo family’s new home! Meet the family and other Habitat supporters who have joined together to continue Habitat for Humanity’s mission. No RSVP necessary, we look forward to seeing you at the celebration.

Groundbreaking Ceremony at 387 Lenox Street, New Haven

On Saturday, February 3, Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven held a groundbreaking at 387 Lenox Street. The future home of the Sanchez family may not look like a gem now but family members, friends, and lots of Habitat volunteers are ready to roll up their sleeves and make this home shine!

387 Lenox Street was built in the 1830’s as the home of Merritt Brown, an oyster fishing captain. The home is located within the Quinnipiac River Historic District of New Haven (in the Fair Haven Heights Neighborhood). The project is being sponsored by Raise the Roof, a community build within our Habitat affiliate. Everyone is looking forward to getting started on this restoration!

6 Saltonstall Avenue & 119 Davenport Avenue nearing completion!

Our two current builds, 6 Saltonstall Avenue and 119 Davenport Avenue, New Haven, are expected to be completed in December!

Abdou Tchagouni and Zakiya Gafo are the future homeowners of 6 Saltonstall, which is being sponsored by Raise the Roof, a longtime Habitat supporter. It is their 13th Habitat house sponsorship!

Yolanda Matos and Axel Hernandez are the future owners of 119 Davenport Avenue, New Haven.

Both families have been doing their 400 hours of sweat equity regularly.

Dedication of 99 Hampton Road, Hamden

Habitat GNH and Sleeping Giant Build (SGB) held a dedication at 99 Hampton Road, Hamden on Saturday, July 15. The house is Habitat’s second Veteran Build and SGB’s eighth Habitat home building project.

The new homeowner is Michael Doyle, a retired Marine, who works at the West Haven V.A.  Lie all Habitat home buyers, Mike volunteered 400 hours of his time to help build his house.

The dedication was attended by several of Mike’s new neighbors, members of Sleeping Giant Build, and Habitat staff and volunteers. Sleeping Giant Build presented Mike with a housewarming gift. The Southford Falls Quilt Guild donated a hand made quilt (their 13th donation to Habitat families)!

Additional support for 99 Hampton Road, Hamden was generously provided by Eversource.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven invites you to volunteer with us!

We currently have two opportunities for groups and individuals (age 16 or older):

  • Construction volunteering on one of our current projects in New Haven. The workday is 9:00am-3:30pm, Tuesday-Saturday, with a short lunch break. (Limited availability on Saturday; call the Volunteer Coordinator to discuss alternatives.)
  • The Habitat ReStore, 286 So. Colony Road, Wallingford (http://newhavencountyrestore.org/. The shifts are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 10am-6pm (half day shift 10:00am-2:00pm or 2:00pm-6:00pm) or Friday-Saturday 10:00am-4:00pm (half day 10:00am-1:00pm or 1:00pm-4:00pm). There is a special student shift Tuesday-Thursday 3:00-6:00pm.

The Habitat ReStore, 286 South Colony Road, Wallingford carries many new and gently used items, including furniture, cabinets, appliances, lighting, hardware, tools, and much, much more. New inventory arrives every week, so you never know what treasures you’ll find!

Store hours are Tuesday-Thursday (10:00am to 6:00pm) and Friday-Saturday (10:00am to 4:00pm).
